Reviews about Applegarth Farm shop and restaurant

  • 2018-01-17, by Peter Danes
This has just become one of my favourite breakfast places. I used to visit here regularly some years ago with my sister in law when my daughter was small and at the time the cafe/restaurant was small and ever so slightly cliquey. Since then the place has undergone a remodel and is much more spacious and has a more relaxed, homely feel. It has a fire in the winter and a licensed bar so you can enjoy a bloody Mary with your full English if you are recovering from a hangover or a bottle of wine with your lunch. Having visited the place twice in the last month I would say that this is one of the best run places locally. The staff are all pleasant and efficient, friendly but not too imposing (a hard balance to get right), the food is delicious (I recommend the sweet corn fritters with bacon and guacamole for breakfast) and prices are IMO reasonable for the quality. little things like water on the tables and properly set tables make it feel like more than just a posh coffee shop. I love my coffee and whilst the flat white was good, it didn't have that velvety texture you get with a truly great flat white (imo milk had been slightly overheated) however on both visits the coffee has been good. The gentleman (sorry I didn't catch his name) who appeared to be running the place was organised and on top of everything that was going on in the restaurant. The female waitress also seemed capable and pleasant and the place had the feel of a quality establishment. The staff were all polite and well mannered and the best thing? as you leave (if you have time) you can pick up some delightful foodstuffs from the farm shop on your way out. it felt like the kind of place that your mum or grandmother would like (average age of clientele appeared to be about 50 when I was there but I imagine yummy mummies and ladies who lunch probably pop in later) but is modern enough that I would be quite happy to work from there with my laptop for a couple of hours (assuming that I had already enjoyed my breakfast and could drag out a couple of coffees until lunch)
